Floreana’s Giant Tortoises Return After 150 Years: A Comeback Story

In a monumental conservation effort, 158 hybrid giant tortoises have been released onto Floreana Island in the Galápagos, marking the return of these majestic reptiles after an absence of approximately 150 years. These young tortoises, aged between 8 and 13, are a crucial part of a mission to re-establish the extinct Floreana giant tortoise (Chelonoidis niger niger). Bred from genetic material linked to the original Floreana species, they carry between 40 and 80 percent of its genetic makeup, making them vital for restoring a lost lineage on the island. Biologist Washington Tapia emphasized the critical genetic significance of reintroducing a species with such a strong connection to the original inhabitants.

This ambitious reintroduction is the culmination of decades of scientific research. In the early 2000s, genetic studies revealed an astonishing discovery: some giant tortoises residing on Isabela Island, another Galápagos island, possessed ancestors from Floreana. These individuals were identified as the last living descendants of the species once thought to be entirely extinct. Building on this breakthrough, the Galápagos National Park, in collaboration with its partners, launched an extensive and elaborate breeding program. The primary objective was to cultivate a population of Galápagos giant tortoises that are as genetically close as possible to the original Floreana giant tortoise, as reported by the Ecuadorian conservation organization “Jocotoco.”

The 158 young tortoises now roaming Floreana are the initial fruits of this dedicated labor. The long-term plan aims to release a total of 700 tortoises onto the island in the coming years, with the goal of fully re-populating it. By carefully selecting adult tortoises with the strongest genetic links to the extinct Floreana species, the breeding program is designed to progressively guide the lineage back towards its original ancestry, explained Christian Sevilla, Director of Ecosystems for the Galápagos National Park. These newly introduced reptiles will share their habitat with nearly 200 human residents, alongside native wildlife such as flamingos, iguanas, penguins, gulls, and hawks.

However, their return also presents challenges, as they must contend with introduced plant species like blackberries and guavas, and invasive animals including rats, cats, pigs, and donkeys. These non-native species, brought to the remote Pacific island by humans, pose a potential threat to the tortoises’ long-term survival. Despite these obstacles, the local community on Floreana has expressed immense joy and pride at the tortoises’ homecoming. One resident described the release as “a dream come true,” highlighting the deep satisfaction felt by the community seeing a project come to fruition after years of anticipation and effort. The successful reintroduction represents a significant step forward in preserving the unique biodiversity of the Galápagos.
