A military transport plane, heavily laden with banknotes issued by the central bank, tragically crashed on Friday at El Alto airport, located just west of Bolivia’s capital, La Paz. The incident resulted in the deaths of at least 15 people, with an additional 20 reported injured, according to fire department officials. The aircraft, attempting to land, veered off the runway, causing significant damage to several parked cars and trucks from scattered debris. The precise cause of the accident remains undetermined, prompting an immediate investigation by aviation authorities.

Adding a surreal element to the tragedy, the crash site was strewn with vast quantities of banknotes that the plane had been transporting. This unusual cargo led to an extraordinary scene as local residents converged on the area, attempting to gather the scattered currency. Police forces quickly intervened, deploying tear gas to disperse the crowds and prevent the collection of the bills. Reports from the public prosecutor’s office confirmed instances of looting around the crash site, leading to the arrest of twelve individuals involved in attempts to abscond with the cash.

The Bolivian Defense Ministry issued a crucial statement regarding the integrity of the banknotes. They clarified that the bills were not yet equipped with serial numbers, rendering them devoid of any legal value or purchasing power. The ministry emphatically warned the public that collecting or attempting to circulate these unnumbered notes would constitute a criminal offense. This official declaration aimed to deter further plundering and underscore the legal ramifications for those attempting to benefit from the accident’s unusual circumstances.

In the aftermath of the crash and the subsequent chaos, operations at El Alto International Airport were temporarily suspended. This closure allowed emergency services to continue their recovery efforts and investigators to begin their crucial work of determining the crash’s origin. The tragic loss of life, combined with the bizarre spectacle of money scattering across the runway and the ensuing public reaction, has sent shockwaves through Bolivia, highlighting both the human cost of the disaster and the unique challenges it presented to authorities.
