Lindsey Vonn’s Olympic Comeback: ACL Tear Won’t Stop Her

Lindsey Vonn, the legendary US ski star, is set to defy medical odds and personal setbacks, announcing her unwavering determination to compete at the Olympia 2026 Winter Games in Cortina d’Ampezzo. Despite sustaining a “complete tear” of her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), along with bone bruises and a meniscus injury in her left knee, the 41-year-old declared her confidence in chasing downhill gold. Her announcement came during a press conference in Cortina d’Ampezzo, underscoring her commitment to what many consider an improbable comeback.

Vonn, known for her resilience throughout a storied career, addressed her injuries with characteristic defiance. “Das Leben ist nicht perfekt,” she stated, adding that she currently experiences no pain in her injured knee. Remarkably, she revealed she had skied on Tuesday, noting her knee showed no swelling. Drawing a comparison to previous challenges, Vonn confidently asserted, “I feel better than 2019 at the World Championships, and back then I didn’t even have an ACL tear.” This statement highlights her incredible mental fortitude and physical preparation, even in the face of such a severe diagnosis.

The devastating injury occurred during the final downhill race before the Games, held in Crans-Montana, where Vonn crashed into a safety net. Although she managed to ski to the finish line, she was subsequently airlifted from the course. Initially, the severity of her left knee injury remained undisclosed. This incident adds another chapter to Vonn’s history of battling injuries, having returned to the World Cup last season with a partial prosthesis in her right knee, all with the explicit goal of securing another Olympic medal in Cortina d’Ampezzo.

Vonn’s immediate focus remains singularly on the downhill event, the “Königinnen-Disziplin” (queen’s discipline). She has left open the possibility of competing in other races at Olympia 2026, stating, “The goal is the downhill. I first have to wait and see how it feels. I first have to drive 85 miles an hour, then I can say.” Her cautious approach, combined with her fierce ambition, sets the stage for what could be one of the most remarkable Olympic performances in recent memory, solidifying her legacy as an athlete who truly never gives up.
